1. If you could choose a movie or serial character, which one would you like to be?
Ever since I was a small child I always wanted to be Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, especially in the initial three movies! He always seemed like the coolest guy: Apart from being a professor of archeology he also went around the world raiding tombs and meeting new people. It seemed like a dream to me!
2. What did you want to be when you were a kid?
I grew up as a child in the countryside in Wales, where we didn’t really have all that much access to technology. The sights of Royal Air Force jets and transport aircraft flying above my house for training always sparked my desire to become an engineer! Luckily my mother was an engineering technician, whom always encouraged me to explore machines and computers. From there, going through school and being introduced to computing and coding seemed to be the very natural steps forward!
3. What are you doing now?
Currently, I am a software developer at ProSiebenSat.1 Tech Solutions. I help developing and maintaining machine learning algorithms by streamlining their processes and writing efficient codes for our software. We are developing cutting edge software using machine learning algorithms and AI (Artificial Intelligence), which allow us to take our televised content and generate all kinds of mined data, such as detecting famous celebrities, or even the emotions in a scene. This allows our business units to more effectively do their jobs, as the support tools we develop enable them to work both easier and faster, by finding the right content exactly when they need it.
4. How did you end up at ProSiebenSat.1?
I met the head of my department, Annina Neumann. She gave an exciting introduction of what we are doing here, across 3 main projects the team was working on. This sparked my interest, and I wanted to give it a go. My main thought was: “If a big TV company is investing so heavily into computer science, it must be something important”. That was the hook.
5. What do you love about ProSiebenSat.1?
I love the culture and the people, it really is a great company to work for. You can talk to anyone and they’ll be willing to help. For me this kind of friendly atmosphere is ideal!
6. How do you think your job will look in five years?
Goodness! Five years ago, we were not even doing stuff in machine learning and AI (Artificial Intelligence)! (laughs) So “Who knows?” is the real question. The future is open to interpretation in a way.
7. What is your insider tip in Munich?
If you are from the UK, the idea of shops being closed on a Sunday is a little unusual. So, my insider tip is to get everything done on a Saturday and enjoy your Sundays. There are a few spots that I like going to, for example at Elisabethplatz: the “Standl 20” is the best coffee shop I have ever been to in Europe, so check that out now! It’s good!
